What the medical abortion pill costs, and why it is not sold alone
Lawful, licensed, confidential. Termination of pregnancy at Pai Hospital is carried out lawfully under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971 (as amended), at a licensed facility, by registered medical practitioners, within the limits and the certification that the Act requires. We do not carry out or offer sex determination of any kind, at any stage, for any reason. Your identity and your treatment are confidential.
The medication is not something that can be bought on its own. It is prescription-only in India, and at Pai Hospital it is given under medical supervision as part of a visit that also includes a scan and a follow-up. That whole visit is what the cost covers, not just the tablets — and the figure you are given after your examination here is the figure you pay.
The consent form is why a pharmacy cannot simply hand it over
A termination requires the consent form prescribed by the government to be signed, and that form exists only at premises licensed for this. A pharmacy may not dispense the medicines without it. That form is there for your protection: it records that the decision was yours, taken with a doctor who had examined you, at a place licensed to do it. Being asked to sign it is one of the plainest signs that you are in the right kind of place.
Why there is no single rupee figure to quote online
A number quoted for "the pill" alone, without a scan to confirm your dates and a follow-up to confirm it worked, is not a complete or a safe price — because a medical termination done without those two things is not a complete or a safe treatment. What it costs for you depends on how many weeks you are and what your scan shows, so the accurate figure comes after you have been examined here, not from a generic number online.
How the figure is fixed
- An estimate on the phone. Usually close, but it rests on a recent ultrasound and cannot account for an examination that has not happened yet.
- Assessment and examination here, by the hospital's own certified doctors, with the investigations repeated so your exact situation and how many weeks you are is known.
- A precise, itemised cost — hospital, medical, pharmacy and laboratory, each set out separately.
- A promised package, in rupees. Hospital fees are taken in full in advance, and the amount does not move at the end.
What the cost actually includes
- The consultation and dating scan beforehand, done here in our own department
- The medication itself, given under supervision at the hospital
- The follow-up visit that confirms the termination is complete

This route closes early
The medication method is suitable only in the earliest weeks. Past that point a short surgical procedure becomes the safer and more reliable option instead, and it is a larger undertaking than the tablets would have been. That is the honest reason to settle your dates now rather than later — not that the law is about to stop you, but that the simplest option is the one that expires first.
Why buying it without a prescription is not a saving
Buying these medicines that way skips the scan and the follow-up that make the method safe — the two things most likely to catch a problem early, including a pregnancy that is growing outside the womb and cannot be treated with tablets at all. Any saving on the tablets is not worth losing that check.
The call is private, and so is the visit
Everything you tell us stays with us. Nothing about your visit is written where anyone else can see it, discussed outside the room, or shared with anyone. The staff are trained over years to be non-judgemental: nobody will ask you to explain or justify yourself, and being unmarried changes nothing at all about the care you are given here. You do not need anyone else's permission for the decision.
