What abortion costs in India, and what changes the number
Lawful, licensed, confidential. Termination of pregnancy at Pai Hospital is carried out lawfully under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971 (as amended), at a licensed facility, by registered medical practitioners, within the limits and the certification that the Act requires. We do not carry out or offer sex determination of any kind, at any stage, for any reason. Your identity and your treatment are confidential.
You are given one figure before anything is done, and that figure does not change at the end. There is no single number to publish, because it depends on how many weeks you are, whether a medical or a surgical approach suits you, and what tests you need first. What we can promise is the process, and that the number you are told is the number you pay.
How your figure is arrived at
- An estimate on the phone. Tell us roughly how many weeks you are and we will give you a close estimate. It rests on a recent ultrasound, and it cannot account for an examination that has not happened yet — so it stays an estimate, honestly labelled as one.
- Assessment and examination here. On arrival, our own certified doctors assess you, examine you and repeat the investigations themselves, so your exact situation and how many weeks you are is known rather than assumed.
- A precise, itemised cost. Only then, and set out separately: hospital, medical, pharmacy and laboratory.
- A promised package, in rupees. Hospital fees are taken in full in advance, and the amount does not move at the end of the treatment. Nothing is added at discharge.
What actually changes the cost
- How many weeks you are. Earlier and later pregnancies are managed differently, and that changes what is involved — earlier is usually the simpler treatment as well as the safer one.
- Medical or surgical. Medical (pill) termination and surgical termination involve different consultations, medication and procedure time.
- Tests beforehand. A dating scan, and sometimes blood tests, come before either option and are part of doing it safely.
- The follow-up visit. Whichever method you choose, the follow-up is part of the cost, not an optional extra — it is what confirms everything is complete.

One thing that costs you nothing
Transport. The hospital runs its own cars and collects patients from anywhere in Goa, and from across the border in Karnataka and Maharashtra, and brings you home again afterwards, free of cost. For many patients that removes the largest hidden cost of the whole visit.
The call itself is private
Everything you tell us on the phone stays with us. The staff are trained over years to be non-judgemental: nobody will ask you to explain or justify yourself, and being unmarried changes nothing about the care you are offered or the way you are spoken to. You do not need anyone else's permission for the decision. Nothing about a visit is discussed outside the room or shared with anyone.
If a termination elsewhere was incomplete
If you had a medical or surgical termination somewhere else and now have heavy bleeding, fever, ongoing pain, or you are simply not sure whether it is complete, come in or call — this is a medical situation that needs attention regardless of where the original procedure was done, and we will not ask you to explain or justify why you are here.

Why don't you list a price on this page?
Because an honest figure depends on your own examination, and a number that does not apply to you is not useful. What we do commit to is that the itemised figure you are given after that examination is the figure you pay.

No. Once you have been assessed and examined here, the itemised figure you are given — hospital, medical, pharmacy and laboratory — is a promised package. Hospital fees are taken in full in advance and the amount does not change.
