Six practical steps to give an IUI cycle a good footing

None of this can promise a particular outcome, but there is a lot within your control before and during an IUI cycle that gives it a clean run. Most of it comes down to finishing your investigations early, keeping to the monitoring schedule, and not leaving questions unanswered once the cycle has already started.

1. Get the basic investigations done before you start

A semen analysis, a check that at least one fallopian tube is open, and basic hormone tests are usually needed before a cycle is planned. Doing these ahead of time, rather than partway through, means the cycle itself is not paused halfway to wait for a result. If you already have reports from elsewhere, bring them to your first consultation — see fertility treatment at Pai Hospital for how investigation and treatment fit together.

2. Keep every monitoring visit

An IUI cycle is timed around a series of scans, sometimes with medication to support ovulation. Missing a scan can mean the team is working with an older picture of where your cycle actually is, which affects the timing of the procedure itself. If a visit clashes with work or travel, tell us in advance rather than after the fact, so it can be rescheduled within the window that still works for that cycle.

3. Take any prescribed medication exactly as directed

Where medication is used to support ovulation, the timing and duration matter more than the fact of taking it at all. Follow the schedule your consultant gives you, and call or WhatsApp us if a dose is missed or you are unsure — do not adjust it yourself.

4. Cut down on smoking and alcohol

Smoking and heavy alcohol use are both linked to poorer egg and sperm quality, and the effect is not limited to whoever is smoking or drinking directly — both partners' habits count. Cutting down in the months before a cycle, not just the days before it, gives the change time to matter.

5. Manage stress reasonably, without overhauling your life

Fertility treatment is stressful by itself, and trying to eliminate every source of stress around a cycle usually adds more pressure than it removes. Reasonable sleep, regular meals, and continuing to work or exercise as normal serves most patients better than a strict regimen taken on for the occasion.

6. Ask questions before a cycle starts, not partway through

Once monitoring has begun, a cycle runs on a fairly tight schedule. Questions about what a scan showed, why a particular day was chosen for the procedure, or what happens if this cycle does not work are all better asked at the first consultation or during a monitoring visit, when there is time to go through them properly.

Getting to appointments

Can I improve my chances by doing more than one thing on this list?

These are all sensible, ordinary steps — no clinic can promise a particular result. They are about giving a cycle a clean, well-timed run rather than a delayed or poorly monitored one.

Do I need to stop all alcohol completely before a cycle?

Your consultant will advise based on your own situation; in general, cutting down well ahead of a cycle is more useful than a short abstinence right before it.

What if I miss a monitoring scan?

Call or WhatsApp us as soon as you know. Depending on where you are in the cycle, it may be possible to reschedule within the same cycle, or your consultant may advise waiting for the next one.

Does my partner need to do anything before the cycle?

Yes — semen quality is affected by the same general factors (smoking, alcohol, stress) as the female side, so both partners' preparation matters.
